Planning the Portrait
Memorable portraits take carefull planning. Clothing style and colors, background harmony, and careful selection of props are all important to a portraits success. Here are some tips to think about when planning the portrait. Very simple garments photograph best. V necks and turtlenecks are flattering provided that neither is exagerated in style. Long sleeves and jeans or pants, instead of shorts and no sleeves are important. Elbows and knees never photograph well. If you wish to have a summer look, short sleeves and light pants work well. If feet are showing in the photograph, make sure the shoes and socks are in keeping with the tones of the portrait. Many times childrens feet look better when bare than with shoes. If you plan to cut your hair it should be done about a week in advance. Giving it time to grow in will make it look more natural. Avoid having a new or different style than you normally have. Proper clothing allows the face or faces to dominate the portrait. Avoid bold colors or patterns in the clothing you choose. Lettering on the front really draws your eye away from the face. Couples or groups should wear tones that are similar. No one person should jump out from the crowd. Light and dark tones together tend to cause confusion. Colors do not have to be the same but should complement each other.
