Children
Children’s expressions are pure magic — they can go from tears to giggles in a heartbeat, and every shift is honest and full of personality. That’s what I love most about photographing kids. Their reactions are real, unfiltered, and beautifully genuine.
I never ask a child to “smile.” Kids know when they’re being prompted, and those canned smiles never reflect who they truly are. Instead, I play, I chat, I give them space to warm up. With decades of experience, I’ve learned how to gently guide children into moments where their real expressions shine through — the spark in their eyes, the shy grin, the burst of laughter that comes out of nowhere.
If your child is shy or slow to warm up, that’s perfectly okay. I have a whole toolkit of approaches that help even the most reserved little ones feel comfortable and seen. Parents often tell me how surprised they are by the genuine smiles I’m able to capture.
Some of my greatest joys come years later, when parents tell me they still treasure the portraits I created when their children were small. I’ve even had high school seniors tell me they love their baby photos I took — and that will never stop humbling me. It’s an honor to create images that become part of a family’s story, held close and remembered for a lifetime.
